Mar 19, 2024SHUBHASH CHANDRA BOSE is one of the greatest freedom fighters that we had.The story is presented in an interesting manner to say the least but i must warn you that there's no guarantee about accurate the story is and it is written in the disclaimer of the show as well.Rajkumar Rao portrays the role of netaji beautifully as he not only shows his aggressive side but also uses his intelligence in fooling the British raj on multiple occasions. It's worth your time people.

Mar 19, 2024The dawn of web-series in India isn't good if compared to its international peers and much of it is to be blamed to its unavoidable Bollywood influence! This author have had the privilege of reading textual sources on the enigmatic freedom leader, although he hasn't read the book by Anuj Dhar on which the series has based itself. Portraying real life characters on screen (big or otherwise) is always challenging. But in this case, there are ample video & audio recordings of Netaji that one can refer to. Besides a close study of his life clearly shows he wasn't brash or arrogant but smart, tactical, stubborn but gentlemanly and suave. Unfortunately, the Netaji we see here isn't that polished. Rao fumbles in his English dialogues (in contrast, Netaji had lived and studied in Cambridge, has been a good student throughout his life. He knew many other non-Indian languages fluently.) Rao fails to bring out the soft-demure side to Netaji which a good reading on Netaji can be felt by anybody. Also, and probably most importantly, Rao looks very unlike Netaji. Rao naturally is good with Hindi dialogues but the Bengali is horrendous, to say the least. Thankfully, Rao has been given few of them. There are many inaccuracies as far as portrayal of the Bose family and other historical details, but since before every episode the makers disclaim any similarity with real person, this author has just let this major drawback pass. However, the supporting ensemble shines, led by the actor playing Darbari Lal. Thumbs up to the production design team & cinematography team. The real winners in this series are the editor and the music duo of Mr. G and Neel Adhikari. The short duration made more compact by the editor and every moment gets embedded and underscored by the music. Watch it for anything but Rao or better still catch a rerun of Bose: the Forgotten Hero, the movie by Shyam Benegal. It may be argued that the characters are not well rounded and very unidimensional and therefore rendered almost caricaturish, which goes on to show the urgent need of quality writers. The American entertainment industry has thrived on creative writers (show-runners), and good cinema/TV series can not be pulled off by mere star power.
