Sep 9, 2022I went to see this movie with my kids ages 12 and 9 having never given the books much more than a passing glance (and not having seen the first movie either). It is a well paced film with some good comedy and Devon Bostick completely nails the annoyingness of an older brother caught between being a grown up to the middle schoolers and a child to the adults. However, when it tries to make some serious points about family relationships from stereotypical characters and gross situations it loses it for me. I would have preferred it if either a) the film lost the narration and seriousness and was just played for laughs or b) the director was forced to watch the box set of The Wonder Years TV series which trod these boards more successfully in an earlier era. By the way, my children have read the books; my daughter (9) thought the first film was better and my son (12) preferred this one.
